City of Cape Town calls on Transnet to thoroughly vet tenders to address port inefficiencies

The City of Cape Town has called on Transnet to ensure contracts are awarded to reputable companies after announcing that it would open up bidding for private partners to address inefficiencies at the city’s port.

Transnet’s National Ports Authority issued a call for bids to construct a bulk terminal at the port for a 25-year period.

This follows an ongoing logistics nightmare at the port as exporters struggle to reach offshore clients, leaving citizens to pay surcharges on delayed imported products.

Mayco member for economic growth, James Vos has welcomed the move but says thorough vetting is needed.

“I believe the call for bids marks a pivotal shift towards enhancing port efficiency. Our research indicates significant potential if implemented, including an additional R6 billion in exports and roughly 20,000 jobs.”
