The Gauteng Health Department said the continued attacks on paramedics when attending emergencies would have long-term effects for many communities.
This follows the conviction of a suspect who was handed a 15-year prison sentence by the Pretoria Magistrates Court this week.
This is in connection with the kidnapping, assault, and hijacking of four Emergency Medical Services (EMS) officials in Pretoria, in July 2023.
The department welcomed the conviction, saying it would deter criminals from committing these crimes.
Spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said, “This conviction sends a strong message to criminals who are targeting healthcare workers when they are discharging their duties. She says this will also deter those who see healthcare workers as targets.”
