Widespread Calls for Retro Award

There has been growing speculation that the Polish superstar would finally be awarded the 2020 prize after the ceremony was cancelled that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lewandowski’s stellar performances in the 2019/20 season, which saw him lead Bayern Munich to a treble, had many believing he was the rightful winner.

France Football’s decision to cancel the ceremony caused confusion among football fans, especially since Europe’s major leagues and competitions had been completed despite the pandemic disruptions.

In 2020, Lewandowski led Bayern Munich to a treble and ended the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League campaign with an impressive 15 goals in 10 matches.

Even Lionel Messi, who won the 2021 Ballon d’Or, acknowledged it was “unfair” that Lewandowski did not receive the 2020 award.

However, France Football director Nicolas Manissier has now dashed those hopes, stating the organisation will not be retroactively awarding the 2020 Ballon d’Or.

Manissier told Football Espana that they are not considering granting Lewandowski the 2020 award due to their strict regulations.

“We are not considering awarding the Ballon d’Or to Robert Lewandowski for 2020. As an institution, we have our own regulations that we rigorously respect,” he told the publication.
