Cape Town police launch manhunt after security guard killed in Athlone

The Western Cape police have launched a manhunt after a 26-year-old security guard was hit and killed at Canal Road in Belgravia on Friday.

According to the police reports, the officer with his colleague were escorting the City of Cape Town electricity department staff when the shooting incident happened.

Police say the motive of the shooting is still unknown.

This incident follows the murder of a 16-year-old girl last month after she was hit by a stray bullet during a shootout between gang rivals in the area while waiting near a school gate for her scholar transport.

Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk, has asked anyone with information about this incident to come forward.

“At a premises (shop) in Canal Road, Belgravia they were approached by armed unidentified males who randomly shot at them fatally injuring the 26-year-old. His colleague ran for cover and on his return found his partner with gunshot wounds to his body. He was declared deceased by medical personnel. His service firearm was taken.”
