OR Tambo District Municipality mayor urges calm amidst Mthatha taxi violence

OR Tambo District Municipality Mayor Mesuli Ngqondwana is calling for calm while urging residents to be on high alert as a taxi strike ensues in Mthatha.

A number of roads, including the N2 and the R61, are still being blocked by minibus taxis following unrest in the area.

Earlier on Monday, five suspects were arrested after firing shots at police – two suspects were injured in the shootout.

OR Tambo District Municipality spokesperson, Zimkhita Macingwane, said that the safety of motorists, truck drivers, pedestrians, and passengers was of utmost concern.

“The executive mayor says authorities are doing their best to facilitate a discussion aimed at resolving the matter without further harm to property and persons. He added that he strongly condemns any violence and disruptions that are occurring during this time.”
