Botswana Woman Lesedi Molapisi Sentenced to Death in Bangladesh for Smuggling Drugs

Botswana woman, Lesedi Molapisi, who was jailed in 2022 for smuggling Heroin drugs into Bangladesh has been sentenced to death.

Harsh Penalty: Lesedi Molapisi Handed Death Sentence for Drug Smuggling

News about Lesedi Molapisi death sentence was announced by blogger Setlhomo Raymond Tshwanelang on Facebook. He revealed that she sentenced to death in Bangladesh on Monday the 27th of May by Judge Md. Aminul Islam.

“Lesedi Molapisi has been sentenced to death in Bangladesh by Judge Md. Aminul Islam, on Monday the 27th. Lesedi is a Motswana lady who attempted to smuggle 3kg Heroin into Bangladesh in 2022.”

Meanwhile, her co- conspirator, Mahibul Islam Masood, a Bangladesh national was acquitted.

Bangladesh’s Zero-Tolerance Policy: Lesedi Molapisi to Appeal Death Sentence

Bangladesh has a zero-tolerance policy towards drug smuggling. Those found guilty of illegally cultivating, producing, transporting, exporting, or importing heroin, cocaine, and cocaine derivatives drugs in excess of 25 grams or millilitres are sentenced to death.

Setlhomo revealed Lesedi Molapisi can appeal her death sentence but asserted that her chances of the success of her appeal are slim and she is likely to remain on death row for a good while.

Lesedi Molapisi Arrested at Bangladeshi Airport with Heroin

Lesedi Molapisi was arrested the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Bangladesh after disembarking a Qatar Airways flight that she had boarded in South Africa. Lesedi was dressed in all-white and had a medical mask when she landed in Bangladesh via Doha on 23 January 2022.

Unbeknownst to the Botswana woman, her arrival coincided with an alert that Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport was being used to smuggle narcotics.

Lesedi Molapisi was nabbed after the police intercepted her in the “Green Channel”, a passage for passengers with no luggage to declare. Her luggage was searched and 3 kilograms of heroin was found concealed inside.
