City Power says it has been left with no choice but to implement load reduction to protect the grid from total collapse.
The power cuts in some parts of the city will come into effect from Monday.
The outages will run during peak times from 6 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 10 pm in high-density areas.
Areas that will be affected include those with high usage levels that threaten to overload electricity equipment.
The utility said that the decision followed extensive efforts to encourage customers to use electricity sparingly.
“Electricity consumption in the City of Johannesburg has reached critical levels, forcing the city’s energy entity, City Power, to embark on stringent measures to protect the grid from total collapse. These measures include intensifying the implementation of ripple relay systems to cut electricity to geysers in homes where the systems are under threat,” said spokesperson, Isaac Mangena.
