Petty theft has landed a sunglasses thief in jail. A man from Mutasa District in Manicaland Province is facing jail time for stealing sunglasses.
Man Jailed For Stealing Sunglasses
53-year-old man, Joseph Zvainei has been sentenced to an effective 4-month prison term for breaking into a house and stealing sunglasses.
The Nyanga Magistrates’ Court found Zvainei guilty of unlawful entry in aggravating circumstances on June 11, 2024.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the complainant returned home from work to find his door lock broken with a U-bolt. Upon entering his house, he discovered Zvainei inside, who had stolen his sunglasses. The incident led to Zvainei’s arrest and subsequent conviction.
In sentencing, the court imposed a 7-month prison term, with 3 months suspended. Zvainei will serve 4 months in prison
Sweet Justice: Praise Kagande’s Shoplifting Saga
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Praise Kagande of Karoi was sentenced to 4 months in prison by the Karoi Magistrates’ Court for shoplifting two packets of sweets valued at US$7. On June 26, 2024, Kagande entered Harare Inn Wholesale under false pretenses and stole the sweets, which were later found concealed in his bag.
Little did Kagande know, however, that his every move had been caught on the establishment’s eagle-eyed CCTV surveillance system. Security swiftly descended upon Kagande as he made his exit, uncovering the pilfered sweets concealed within his bag.
For his illicit indulgence, Kagande was handed a 4-month sentence by the local judiciary, with 2 months hanging by a thread for the next 5 years.
The remaining sentence, somewhat mercifully, was suspended on the condition that Kagande dedicates 70 hours of his time to community service.
