It’s been a stormy return to school in the Western Cape, but not in the rural town of Wupperthal, where the weather has forced authorities to delay the start of the third term.
The small town, nestled in the Cederberg mountains almost 300 kilometres from Cape Town, only has one school with about 200 learners.
It’s currently cut off due to flooded roads and Cederberg Mayor Ruben Richards said that a decision to delay its reopening was taken last week.
“We approached the school principal and said according to the weather, it’s likely that we are going to have rain and the waterways will be flooded. Be proactive and think about not re-opening the school. The water came and kids can’t get to school. You need a boat to cross the river.”
