Electoral Court to hear MK Party matter challenging validity of election results

The Electoral Court has agreed to hear the MK Party’s matter, challenging the results of the recent general elections.

This is despite the party withdrawing its bid before the court.

The MK Party claimed the results were rigged, and that they were the outright winner.

Former President Jacob Zuma’s party came third at the polls, making it to Parliament for the first time.

Earlier in July, the MK Party withdrew its electoral court challenge of the election results but said this was not a concession on its part.

They claimed to have more evidence pointing to irregularities but said they would only bring this before the courts at a later stage.

However, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) approached the court with a request for the matter to still be heard.

The court has now granted this request setting the matter down for 29 July, and the IEC will make its representations but it’s unclear if the MK Party will file its own papers.
