Gert van Emmenis, the man charged for the accident that killed 11 children and the driver of their scholar transport, has been granted R20,000 bail.
He was charged with culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.
Van Emmenis agreed to the State’s bail conditions requesting that he hand over his passport and refrain from contacting any of the witnesses.
Despite requesting that he be granted only R10,000 bail, Van Emmenis was able to meet the R20,000 bail set by the court.
The National Prosecution Authority (NPA)’s Lumka Mahanjana: “The State did not oppose bail at the moment, as he is facing a schedule one offence and number two, his address was confirmed, therefore there were no grounds for the State to oppose bail.”
