In a shocking incident, a 35-year-old woman from Chipinge, has been jailed for setting her polygamist husband on fire in a fit of anger over his extramarital affair.

The incident, which took place on New Year’s Day, resulted in her husband suffering severe burns.

Legal Verdict: Chipinge Woman Sentenced to Jail for Setting Polygamist Husband on Fire

Cecilia Chitambo’s trial concluded last week, presided over by Chipinge regional magistrate Noel Mupeiwa.

The charges brought against Chitambo were related to attempted murder, as defined in Section 189, read with Section 47 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

She was found guilty and convicted of the crime. The court sentenced Chitambo to 18 months of imprisonment, with six months suspended for a period of five years, contingent upon her good behavior. Consequently, Chitambo will serve an effective jail term of 12 months.

Uncontrolled Jealousy: Polygamy Dispute Turns Violent in Chipinge

According to the State’s case, the incident unfolded when Chitambo, who is the second wife of Fungai Nyazana, confronted her husband about allegations of infidelity. The argument escalated during Nyazana’s visit to their matrimonial home. Eventually, Chitambo left and sought refuge at her parents’ house.

The following day, Chitambo returned home, and another dispute erupted between the couple, this time centering around missing money. Tempers flared, and Chitambo disappeared briefly, only to return with a container filled with petrol.

Tragic Turn of Events: Domestic Conflict Ends with Husband Set Ablaze

Without warning, Chitambo doused Nyazana with the flammable liquid and set him ablaze. In a desperate attempt to extinguish the fire, Nyazana rushed to the kitchen hut and grabbed a bucket of water.

Eventually, he was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment, while Chitambo was apprehended by authorities.
