ActionSA wants Matatiele Municipal manager investigated over tender

ActionSA Parliamentary Caucus leader, Athol Trollip, says the party has written to the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa, to attend to allegations of financial misconduct and irregular tender awarding at Matatiele Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape.

Trollip says an application has been filed to interdict the awarding of the security contract for the Municipal Mayor, Sonwabile Mngenela.

Despite that a R68-million contract was awarded to a security company during the ongoing court application. Trollip says ActionSA believes the municipality is descending into a mafia state.

“And even more concerning is the behaviour of the Mayor of Matatiele, who is walking around with armed guards from the transaction of one tender to another, for security. This kind of behaviour speaks of a mafia state and gangster operations.

And we have written to the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to ask him to take action about the state of affairs in Matatiele. We just cannot continue enduring and tolerating gangster behaviour and mafia state operation in local government.
