Why Ndodephethe Mthethwa Joined MK Party

Ndodephethe Mthethwa, former ANC Far North regional chairperson, has officially left the ANC for the MK Party. Mthethwa, who previously served as the mayor of Jozini Municipality and an ANC MPL, confirmed his departure after the May 2024 elections, citing frustration with the ANC’s failure to prioritise the needs of the black poor.

Mthethwa accused ANC leaders of prioritizing personal gain over serving the people. He also criticized the party for using state institutions to target internal rivals during leadership contests.

“The ANC no longer serves the interests of the black poor. When the ANC is heading to an elective conference, they use state organs to eliminate internal political opponents,” Mthethwa said.

Mthethwa is currently facing corruption charges related to alleged misuse of municipal funds during his tenure as mayor. However, he dismissed the charges as politically motivated, claiming they were part of internal ANC factional battles.

In response, ANC KwaZulu-Natal provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo rejected Mthethwa’s claims. Mtolo stated that Mthethwa was instructed to step aside due to the ANC’s commitment to ethical leadership and anti-corruption efforts. The directive barred him from participating in party activities until his name was cleared.

“Individuals accused of undermining the ANC’s values will not be allowed to hold leadership positions,” Mtolo said.

Mthethwa is one of several prominent figures to defect to the MK Party, joining others like former deputy provincial chairperson Willies Mchunu, ex-Msunduzi deputy mayor Mervyn Dirks, and Thobani Zuma, a former Moses Mabhida regional leader.

MK Party Prepares for First Anniversary Rally

The MK Party, which won 45% of the KwaZulu-Natal vote in the May elections, is gearing up for its first anniversary rally at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday. The event will feature leaders from various political groups, including the EFF and ATM, who have been invited to show their support.

MK Party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu confirmed the participation of these political figures.
