Authorities seize assets worth R52 million in COVID-19 corruption case

Law enforcement authorities have seized various assets and properties valued at over R52 million in connection with a COVID-19-related corruption case.

The assets are linked to 22 senior management officials, service providers and entities involved in an alleged corruption network within the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works.

The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) targeted the officials, believed to have acquired the assets through Personal Protective Equipment-related (PPE) tenders.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says, “We are targeting 34 locations around the country to ensure that the owners of these assets and properties are not able to dispose of them.
