Minister of Police Bheki Cele said that over R13 million had been allocated from his department’s budget for community policing forum (CPF) structures in the Western Cape.
Cele confirmed this after CPF officials in Gugulethu demanded an incentive for their services during an imbizo in the area last week.
The CPF members had complained that they worked under unsafe conditions and that sometimes their lives were under threat.
Meanwhile, the Western Cape CPF chaiperson, Francina Lucas, said she’d been fighting for the community safety structures to receive a monthly stipend.
“It is on record that we do support the call for a stipend for CPF officials and the registered neighbourhood watches. This call has been made for quite a couple of years, and we are still waiting for a response, which we hope will be positive.”
