Black Motion’s Smol and Mörda reunite

Fans of Black Motion will be thrilled to know that the group’s founding members, Thabo “Smol” Mabogwane, and Bongani “Mörda” Mohosana have reunited.

Speaking to SowetanLIVE, Smol said that their reunion will give birth to their collaboration song, Takala Zwino– an ode to friendship.

In 2022, when Mörda left Black Motion, Smol teamed up with renowned DJ and producer Kabelo “Problem Child” Koma, thus ensuring the Black Motion brand does not die.

Speaking about his separation from Mörda – who is married to musician, DJ Zinhle – Smol said it was a difficult phase in his life. However, he said he is glad it happened because it gave him a chance to figure out what he wants as an artist.

“Some of our supporters met at our shows years ago and are now a family – these people have put their lives in our hands as musicians, so I had no choice but to consider them when it came to keeping and sustaining the brand Black Motion,” said the drummer.

“I also look at music groups such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo who have been in existence for over 40 years… there’s no way they didn’t have problems or others wanting to leave the group. So, during that time, I looked for solutions more than anything else.”

Smol shared that their song will be released on 10 May. The track also features Afrikan Roots and Deejay Buckz.

“Takala Zwino is about savouring the good times with good friends. That nothing else matters but the present moment with your inner people or bloodline. It means that through anything, we will make it… despite what we go through, my day one is still my day one,” he said.

“I was playing live a couple of months ago sharing this new song; this sparked interest from Afrikan Roots, and Buckz said he too would like to hop on. Somehow our live session was shared on the Tsa ko Pitori Instagram page of us in the studio which Mörda saw… he then asked to join in the song. I saw no issue and I agreed mainly because I knew the joy it’d bring to people.

A snippet of the song, as well as a behind-the-scenes shoot was shared by Smol on his Instagram account.

In December 2022, Sunday World revealed that Mörda was accused by his former record label boss, Moses Nkia Mokgoko — of breaking into the group’s Centurion house that month.

At the time, the Mohigan Sun hitmaker accused of stealing recording studio equipment estimated at a value of R243 312,30.

However, Mörda’s legal representative, Neo Mashele, denied the allegations. He told the publication that the equipment belonged to Spirit Motion which both Morda and Thabo Smol proportionately owned.

Mörda later returned the equipment after Spirit Motion revealed it won it’s court case against him at the Gauteng High Court in January 2023.
