Bulawayo’s Deputy Mayor Edwin Ndlovu and Councillor Mpumelelo Moyo have been arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) on bribery charges. The duo allegedly demanded $20,000 from Labenmon Investments in exchange for facilitating approval for a cement mixing plant on a 5.6-hectare plot of land.
According to ZACC, Labenmon Investments initially applied for 10 hectares of land in November 2023 but was unsuccessful. They resubmitted their application in April 2024 and received an offer letter for the smaller plot. It was then that Ndlovu and Moyo allegedly approached Tsitsi Mapfumo, representing Labenmon Investments, demanding the $20,000 cash reward on behalf of 20 other Bulawayo City Council councillors for facilitating the approval.
Ndlovu and Moyo are currently being held at Mzilikazi Police Station and are set to appear at Tredgold Magistrate Court on November 16, 2024. This development underscores ZACC’s efforts to tackle corruption and ensure accountability within local government institutions.
