Capitec & Microsoft hit with technical issues causing chaos for clients

Capitec Bank on Friday experienced technical issues which forced it to warn its customers it was aware of the problems. Capitec sent a text message to its customers, saying that the bank was working hard to resolve the issue.

The low-cost bank said that they are experiencing nationwide service issues including issues with their card division. They apologized for the issue and inconvenience.

“We are currently experiencing nationwide service issues, affecting all service. We are working hard to resolve this. Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated. We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” the bank said via SMS to its customers.

It also seems that there are major issues with the bank’s ATMs and a number of them are down according to X users.

Downdetector.co.za said that thousands of Capitec clients have been experiencing technical issues and noted that the problem started at around 7am on Friday.

According to Reuters, the issue may lie with global cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike as there is a widespread IT outage impacting several Australian media, banks and telecommunications companies.

Australia’s National Cyber Security Coordinator Michelle McGuinness said on X that a large-scale technical outage is affecting a number of companies and services across Australia.

“Our current information is this outage relates to a technical issue with a third-party software platform employed by affected companies. There is no information to suggest it is a cybersecurity incident. We continue to engage across key stakeholders,” she added.

Microsoft users

Microsoft users were also unable to access several Microsoft 365 applications and services on Friday.

Also, a Microsoft cloud services outage grounded a number of planes in the United States.

“We’re investigating an issue impacting users’ ability to access various Microsoft 365 apps and services,” the company said.
