The death toll in the accident that claimed the lives of learners on the West Rand has been revised from 13 to 12.
Initial reports suggested that 12 children had died, as well as the driver of the scholar transport.
The updated figure followed a meeting with Rocklands Primary School, where the principal revealed that it was 10, and not 11, of the school’s learners who died. The other learner was from Blyvooruitsig Laerskool.
The Merafong Municipality said the revision of the death toll does not numb the pain experienced by the families and children.
Deputy Mayor Mogomotsi Sello said, “We managed to meet with the school and officials from different departments. It was indeed confirmed that 10 learners were from the school. At this point in time, we were not given the names.”
Meanwhile, Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane is expected to meet with the families of some of the deceased.
