Chief Nyamaropa Faces Allegations Of Misconduct After His Viral Video Insulting Subject
Allegations have surfaced accusing Chief Nyamaropa of undermining the dignity of his subject during traditional court proceedings. A Harare resident, Pritchard Tafadzwa Paradzayi, has taken legal action to demand an investigation into Chief Nyamaropa, whose birth name is Munyaradze Tivange.

Paradzayi has formally requested the involvement of the president of the National Council of Chiefs, urging them to address the alleged misconduct. This demand is detailed in a letter drafted by Paradzayi’s legal representative, Obey Shava of Shava Law Chambers, and addressed to Chief Mtshane Khumalo.

Controversial Video Sparks Outrage

The controversy stems from a widely circulated video in which Chief Nyamaropa is reportedly seen insulting a female litigant during a court session. In the video, the chief allegedly instructs the woman to remove her glasses while calling her “stupid.”

The video, uploaded to the ZimNews Beat TV YouTube channel, has caused a public uproar, with many condemning the chief’s behaviour as both demeaning and disrespectful.

Formal Complaints and Legal Basis

According to the letter dated November 27, Paradzayi emphasizes his interest in ensuring that traditional leaders uphold principles of fairness and dignity in their judicial duties. The letter outlines the following key concerns:

  • The chief’s conduct, as evidenced in the video, demonstrates a lack of respect for women, promoting a culture of impunity in traditional courts.
  • Such behavior tarnishes the reputation of traditional leaders and undermines public confidence in their judicial processes.
  • The incident violates constitutional rights, specifically Section 51, which safeguards human dignity, and Section 69, which guarantees a fair hearing.

Government and Legal Responses

In addition to the council of chiefs, Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe has been notified of the situation. Paradzayi’s lawyers have urged the minister to take swift and decisive action, warning that failure to address the matter may lead to legal proceedings.

The letter demands a thorough investigation into Chief Nyamaropa’s conduct, along with appropriate corrective measures, to be communicated within 10 days of the letter’s receipt. If these demands are not met, litigation will proceed as Paradzayi instructed.
