“Chimukuyu Che…”: Ex-Mugabe Minister Walter Mzembi Recounts How Nasty Spelling Blunder Cost Air Zimbabwe Staff Their Jobs

Walter Mzembi, an ex-Mugabe minister, has recalled how a nasty spelling blunder once got Air Zimbabwe staff in trouble.

Mzembi made these comments following a murderous mistake in the Financial Gazette yesterday.

The Grave Mistake

The Ministry of Defence and War Veterans Affairs placed a message in the Financial Gazette congratulating President Emmerson Mnangagwa on turning 82. However, at the bottom of the message was the inscription, “May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

The blunder caused a wild uproar online, and the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services’ permanent secretary, Nick Mangwana, expressed his displeasure over the mishap.

The Financial Gazette has profusely apologised for the error to President Mnangagwa, his family, the Government and the Ministry of Defence.

In response to the scandal, Walter Mzembi, former Foreign Affairs Minister under the late President Robert Mugabe, has recounted one classic Air Zimbabwe incident.

Mzembi said the national carrier gave former President Mugabe a menu with a filthy spelling mistake, and there was chaos:

“At some stage, an Air Zimbabwe Menu was handed to President Mugabe with an expensive blunder of this nature. It read “Chimukuyu neDh_dhi” instead of Chimukuyu neDovi.”

The former Minister commented on the erroneous congratulatory message to President Mnangagwa:

“This “RIP” is clearly another of those expensive mistakes which beats an entire system in proofreading! While the Mugabe one was a nasty joke, this Mnangagwa one spells doom.

“Attention to detail is supercritical across Government. We are not only losing the messaging but millions and millions of dollars in purchases that do not check detail; computer servers being bought by Parliament for $1500000 each where they cost $4500 or less, and most recently where the Country lost $100 million in a “Zecgate” Scandal still unresolved to this day!”
