In a separate case, 26-year-old Dunmore Teta received a nine-year prison sentence after being found in possession of raw ivory.

The Harare Magistrates’ Court was informed that on January 26, 2024, around noon, police received a tip-off that Teta had ivory in Tynwald North, Harare, and was seeking buyers. Acting on the information, police detectives posed as potential buyers and arranged a meeting with Teta along Kirkman Road. During the meeting, Teta produced two pieces of elephant tusks hidden in a satchel and agreed to sell them for US$60 per kilogram.

At that moment, other detectives moved in and apprehended Teta, who failed to produce a permit for possessing the ivory. The recovered tusks weighed 2.03 kilograms.
