Chitungwiza Police Officer Arrested For Physically Assaulting His Ex-Wife Over Hospital Bills

A Police officer has been arrested and sentenced after he physically assaulted his ex-wife over their child’s hospital bills

The 30-year-old police officer from Chitungwiza appeared before the Nyanga Magistrates’ Court, facing charges of physical abuse involving his former spouse.

Details leading to the arrest

According to the NPA, the court heard that on May 12, 2024, at approximately 9:00 AM, the officer met his ex-wife at Nyanga District Hospital, where their son was undergoing treatment.

An argument ensued between the two regarding the payment of the hospital bill. During the altercation, the ex-wife took the officer’s phone, prompting the officer to physically assault her using both clenched fists and open hands, targeting various parts of her body.

Following the incident, the ex-wife sought help at ZRP Nyanga, where she lodged a formal complaint, leading to the officer’s arrest.

Sentencing of the abuser by the court

The court sentenced the officer to pay a fine of USD120 or face 20 days in jail if he failed to pay. Additionally, a three-month jail term was suspended for two years on the condition that he did not commit a similar offence during this period.

Gweru man arrested for defaulting on maintenance

In another case, a man in Gweru has been brought to Gweru Magistrates’ court because of not paying child maintenance. The man was accused of disregarding a court order to pay $43 per child per month to his former wife for their two minor children.

The accused person had since accumulated maintenance arrears of $792 between June 2023 and April 2024. The court then ordered the accused person to clear his arrears by the 27th of May, 2024. Failure to do so would serve a custodial sentence of 60 days.
