Civil Servants To Start Receiving Annual Bonus Next Week: Everything You Should Know

Civil servants in Zimbabwe are set to start receiving their 2024 annual bonus from next week, with the Government paying in two instalments.

The first 50 percent will be disbursed alongside November salaries and the remainder paid in December. This staggered payment approach is designed to alleviate pressure on the banking system and minimize long queues.

According to the Government’s schedule, payments will begin with security personnel, followed by health sector employees, then education workers, and finally the rest of the civil service. Traditional leaders and their messengers are also set to receive annual bonuses, maintaining last year’s policy.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Simon Masanga, told The Sunday Mail that the Government has already implemented a salary increase for public sector employees to offset the impact of the recent devaluation of the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency.

A salary agreement was signed and the cost-of-living adjustment has been paid with arrears. The specific payment modalities are managed under Treasury,” he confirmed.

Traditionally, civil servants in Zimbabwe receive their bonuses in November and December, but the split approach this year follows ongoing concerns about the economic impact on public workers. The bonus payments aim to help public sector workers cope with rising costs after the recent 42 percent devaluation of ZiG, which significantly affected their purchasing power.

Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions chairperson, Cecilia Alexander, expressed support for the bonus payment arrangement, which aligns with the union’s agreement with the Government.

“According to our agreement with the employer, the bonus will be paid in two instalments. The first 50 percent will come with the November salary and the remainder will be paid in December. I understand the paysheets (for the bonuses) were finalised yesterday (Thursday).”

Negotiations over public sector working conditions, conducted through the National Joint Negotiating Council, recently resulted in a salary adjustment for civil servants paid in local currency. This adjustment aims to protect the workers’ purchasing power amid currency devaluation.

In response to the devaluation, Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube announced a pay increase to better align public sector salaries with current economic conditions.
