As the armed robbers were leaving the mall, law enforcement officers and private security personnel intercepted them. This led to a fierce shootout between the suspects and the police, during which two police officers and three suspects were injured.
One police officer received medical attention on the scene, while the other was taken to a local healthcare facility in serious but stable condition.
According to reports, four of the suspects were apprehended just outside the mall, on Christiaan De Wet Road, where two firearms were recovered.
The police and private security continued to pursue the other suspects to Dobsonville, where three more individuals were arrested and two additional firearms seized. The swift action not only led to the capture of the criminals but also resulted in the recovery of some of the stolen jewellery.
Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, commended the collaborative efforts between the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), and private security companies.
He praised their coordinated response, which played a crucial role in neutralizing the situation and apprehending the suspects.
“I would like to thank all the law enforcement agencies who worked together to ensure that the suspects are arrested and firearms recovered soon after the commission of crime. These arrests should send a message to all the criminals that law enforcement agencies are ready for them this festive season,” said Lieutenant General Mthombeni.
The arrests come at a crucial time as the festive season approaches, a period often marked by an uptick in criminal activities. Mthombeni’s statement highlights the readiness of law enforcement agencies to tackle any criminal elements during this time.
