The German coach was leaving the venue after witnessing the dramatic Chibuku Super Cup final, where Dynamos Football Club made history by becoming the first team to clinch the cup two times in a row. They triumphed over Ngezi Platinum in a nail-biting penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of intense play.
As Nees approached his car, an unidentified man approached him under the guise of greeting him. The man then attempted to snatch the coach’s phone but failed in his effort.
This incident, though minor, reinforced the notorious stereotype of Mbare being a hotspot for petty crime.
Zimbos React: Humour Meets Concern
After Soccer24 reported the story on X (formerly Twitter), Zimbabweans flooded the comment section with a mix of humour, concern, and references to Killer T’s Masuspect, whose lyrics resonate with the situation:
“Vapfanha vacho vanobhosha masuspect. Havana basa unoseenza kugovernment, vanongorova nechidhura, havatairise face.” (“These young guys just con everyone. They don’t care even if you work for the government. They strike indiscriminately.”)
Here’s what some users had to say:
@Saulmakosa:
The coach is new in Zimbabwe and he needs assistant to show him around . Mbare needs someone who knows the area there are too many thieves
