Convicted serial killer Sifiso Mkhwanazi has been sentenced to six life terms for the brutal murders and rapes of six s.e.x workers.
Earlier in 2024, the 21-year-old was found guilty of multiple charges, including six counts of murder, six of rape, defeating the ends of justice, possession of a firearm, and theft.
Mkhwanazi, who confessed to committing these heinous crimes between April and October 2022 at his father’s panel beating workshop in Johannesburg, stood before the court as Judge Cassim Moosa handed down the hefty sentence on Wednesday.
Moosa shared findings from psychiatrists at the Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital. They concluded that Mkhwanazi would likely re-offend if he were to be released.
“Murder read with the provisions of Section 51 one of Act 105 of 1997, you are sentenced to life imprisonment.”
The court heard heart-wrenching victim impact statements, revealing that two of Mkhwanazi’s victims were at advanced stages of pregnancy. Moosa condemned the inhumanity of the crimes, stating that the gravity of Mkhwanazi’s actions warranted the severe punishment.
At just 19 years old, Mkhwanazi began his killing spree, having left school with grade 7 as his highest qualification.
He will begin to serve his sentence on Wednesday.
