While Gauteng law enforcement believes they have thwarted the ATM bombings’ syndicate by arresting the masterminds, crime researchers believe such acts are now being managed from behind bars. This is after a number of suspects were arrested and some convicted for possession of large sums of stained cash and detonators.
Following Operation Vala Umkoti, which targeted illicit mining and the terrorising of communities in Gauteng by Zama Zama gangs, the Zama Zamas changed their strategy and began targeting ATMs. Most of the ring leaders, according to Gauteng police are in jail, resulting in isolated bombing incidents in Gauteng.
“From January to date, we have seen an arrest of about 38 suspects mostly undocumented illegal foreigners. Of those 38, there is about eight of them that have been convicted for possession of stained bank notes,” says Gauteng police spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili.
Muridili says they have established a team of detectives from the Serious and Violent Crime’s Unit to deal with murder and robbery That team has cooperation from the banking industry as well as private investigators from filling stations. They also work with crime intelligence as well as security companies.
