In the meantime, the Department of Health has activated the National Institute for Communicable Disease (NICD) to trace and examine the source of the poisoning of foodstuffs and make recommendations. The ANC Youth League is calling on president Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently address the nation on food safety.

Pressure is mounting for a state of emergency to be declared following the deaths of several children from suspected food poisoning.
