Deadly Accident Leaves 15 Dead and Dozens Injured on Harare-Masvingo Highway
In a heartbreaking turn of events, a fatal accident occurred on Friday afternoon, claiming the lives of at least 15 individuals and leaving numerous others injured. The incident took place along the Harare-Masvingo road when a commuter omnibus collided head-on with a haulage truck, near Beatrice.
The accident involved three vehicles. According to a report by Masvingo Mirror, the accident unfolded as a truck attempted to overtake a VW Polo. Unfortunately, the truck struck the Polo from behind, causing it to veer into the opposite lane and collide head-on with the sprinter kombi.
Both the VW Polo, which had only a driver on board and the truck were travelling towards Harare when the accident occurred at the 53 km peg near Beatrice. Tragically, fourteen passengers lost their lives instantly, while one individual passed away at Beatrice Hospital. Additionally, 29 passengers sustained injuries, with the truck driver suffering severe injuries.
National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident. As of now, Assistant Commissioner Nyathi stated that the injured individuals had been transported to Beatrice Hospital for medical attention. He further mentioned that the Chivhu Traffic police officers were currently at the accident scene and that the police would provide additional updates in due course.
“The injured have been taken to Beatrice Hospital and we will continue to release more details later on as some of our police officers are still on the ground,” he said.
