Defence in Nafiz Modack trial tries to cast doubt on evidence from Hawks officer

The cross-examination of a Hawks officer who testified in the high-profile trial of alleged underworld gang boss, Nafiz Modack, finally got underway on Thursday.

Modack, along with 14 co-accused, face a slew of charges related to allegedly running a criminal empire.

The 122 charges include the murder of top cop Charl Kinnear, extortion, money laundering and racketeering.

Defence attorneys on Thursday tried to cast doubt on evidence presented in court by Hawks officer, Edward du Plessis.

Defence attorney for Amaal Jantjies on Thursday refuted allegations her client received money from Empire Investment Cars, a company Modack allegedly used to pay some of the accused to commit crimes.

Jantjies is accused of receiving five payments from the company amounting to R64,000.

She is also accused of plotting five hits on Kinnear before his eventual murder in September 2020.

Defence attorney Paulina Andrews on Thursday told the court Jantjies was asked by her employer at the time, attorney, Karriem Abdul, to receive the money on his behalf.

The cross-examination of Du Plessis will continue on Monday.
