Eastern Cape’s Mabuyane asks Ramaphosa to deploy SANDF to deal with taxi-related violence in Mthatha

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane says he’s requested the president to assist with deploying the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to parts of Mthatha rocked by taxi-related violence.

The N2 and R61 have been blockaded with trucks, amidst the circulation of disturbing images showing trucks being torched and looted.

Mabuyane said that these acts were allegedly perpetuated by disgruntled members of the taxi industry, who had their firearms confiscated following the resurgence of taxi violence in Mthatha, Tsolo, and Nqanqarhu.

The premier’s Spokesperson, Yanga Funani: “The premier has instructed law enforcement agencies to intervene in Mthatha, so as to bring order in the town. He has also thanked police for acting swiftly on those who wanted to disrupt operations in the Mthatha Airport. What we will not tolerate are acts of anarchy that include the blocking of national roads and looting of goods from trucks.”
