The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in Zimbabwe announced that its electronic enrolment system for Form One boarding school applicants will open on Friday, 1 November 2024, marking the start of the admission process for the 2025 academic year.

Parents and guardians aiming to enrol their children in boarding schools have until 31 December to submit their applications through the Electronic Ministry Application Platform (Emap) at [www.emap.co.zw].

In a circular, the Ministry urged parents and guardians to access the platform promptly to secure spots amid limited boarding school spaces.

“Parents/guardians who wish to send their children to boarding schools are advised to start applying through the platform https://www.emap.co.zw with effect from 1st November up to 31 December 2024,” the statement read.

How The System Works

Under the Emap system, applicants can select up to five schools. If an application is accepted at one institution, the applicant is automatically removed from consideration at the remaining schools unless the offer is declined.

“Successful applicants will be notified through short message service (SMS) by the respective school heads,” the Ministry added.

The Ministry also warned that spaces are highly competitive, and applicants should have alternative plans in case boarding placements are unavailable.

As part of the system’s functionality, applicants will see updates on their application status, including “pending” for those still under review, “accepted” for those offered a place, and “processed” once a spot is secured elsewhere. Rejections will be noted for those who don’t meet school criteria.

Initially introduced in 2016, the platform aims to address transparency issues in enrolment, particularly regarding previous practices where some schools charged fees for entry exams despite limited availability of places. The Ministry has clarified that schools will rely on Grade Seven results to enrol pupils, ensuring a fair and consistent process.

Despite the streamlined system, boarding schools face capacity limitations, with only 25,000 available spots for the more than 400,000 students who completed Grade Seven this year.
