The Corruption Case That Chopped His Head

Obadiah Moyo, the former Health Minister of Zimbabwe, found himself at the centre of a corruption scandal that shook the nation. He was accused of abusing his office by engaging in corrupt activities related to the procurement of COVID-19 medical supplies.

The case against him was built around the illegal awarding of a lucrative contract, valued at US$60 million, to Drax International. This contract was allegedly secured without adhering to the proper competitive tender process, raising questions about its legitimacy.

The controversy intensified over revelations that the medical supplies were sold to the Zimbabwean government at highly inflated prices. This not only represented a misuse of public funds but also compromised the country’s ability to effectively manage the health crisis posed by the pandemic. In response to the allegations, President Emmerson Mnangagwa dismissed Moyo from his ministerial position, citing inappropriate conduct for a public official.

Following his removal from office, Moyo was arrested and subsequently released on bail. The courts absolved him over a year later.
