Gauteng Dept says it can’t interfere in outcome of internal probe into PHSG racism claims

The Gauteng Department of Education says it cannot interfere with the controversial outcome of an internal investigation into claims of racism at the Pretoria High School for Girls.

This comes after the school’s governing body cleared 12 pupils of wrongdoing.

They were accused of being part of a so-called “whites only” WhatsApp group, where pupils allegedly perpetuated racial micro-aggressions.

Despite an uproar over the outcome of the probe, Gauteng Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said the department respected the school’s decision.

“The GDE respects this outcome as the SGB’s authority is enshrined in the South African Schools Act, 1996. Therefore, the GDE cannot interfere with the outcome since SGBs are empowered by law to initiate and facilitate disciplinary hearings against learners. As such, any transgression of a school’s code of conduct by a learner is the responsibility of the SGB, to enforce appropriate action accordingly,” Mabona said.
