Gauteng Education offers learners psychosocial support after head boy’s drowning

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is offering psychosocial support to learners and staff at Greenside High School – in Johannesburg – following the death of head boy Reza Saloojee.

Preliminary police findings suggest that on Sunday while fishing with friends, Saloojee dived into the Vaal Dam in an attempt to retrieve a fishing toolbox from the water.

The matric learner and head boy was forced to contend with a strong current before a search for him began.

Saloojee’s body was discovered on Tuesday, with the cause of death listed as drowning.

“The search and rescue operation continued through Sunday night and into the next day. Sadly, at approximately 13:00 on Tuesday, the police divers confirmed. The psychosocial support has been made available to learners and family,” said GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona.
