Following disappointing audit outcomes on Gauteng municipalities, the provincial government said that it has introduced interventions to improve the preparing of financial reports in local governments.
Out of the 11 municipalities in Gauteng, only Midvaal received a clean audit status for the 2022/2023 financial year.
On Thursday, Gauteng Treasury said that moves had been made to improve the audit outcomes for the following financial years.
In the Auditor-General’s report, only 27% of financial statements received from Gauteng municipalities were of good quality.
Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile said that there was clearly an issue from municipal accounting officers in preparing financial statements.
He said that the province had introduced programmes to review the statements prior to being submitted to the AG.
“These reviews have been intensified in the current year to include testing at the source document level for high-risk areas, all our concerns during the review have been rectified before the submissions.”
Maile said that he was encouraged by the fact that all Gauteng municipalities submitted their financial statements to the AG on time.
