Non-profit organization (NPO) Gift of the Givers has stepped in to assist residents and businesses affected by devastating floods in the Eastern Cape.
Late Saturday night, Kariega, Gqeberha, and East London were hit by heavy rain, resulting in flooding that continued into the early hours of Sunday morning.
At least two people have been confirmed dead, while six others remain unaccounted for.
Through several rescue operations, emergency personnel in the province said they removed at least 70 people who were at risk at various mustering points.
Working with the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and others, Gift of the Givers founder Imtiaz Sooliman said they are bolstering their boots on the ground.
“We are flying teams from Cape Town, George, and Adelaide. Our head office in Pietermaritzburg is on standby to send any additional supplies.”
The deadly flooding swept through the inner parts of Kariega, Port of Gqeberha, and parts of East London, leaving a trail of devastation.
