Ruth Hwara’s uncle, Nigel Mukono, has been accused of paying lobola with kidney donations days after she died.
Ruth passed away on 15 August after succumbing to a kidney disease. This was despite Zimbos offering tens of thousands in donations towards a transplant.
The Heartwrenching Story Of The Avoidable Death
Ruth, in need of a life-saving kidney transplant, had funds raised for her medical procedure through a GoFundMe campaign. However, it emerged that Tendai Chibwe, an Ecocash agent, had stolen some of the donated money.
Court reports alleged that Chibwe deceived Ruth’s uncle, Nigel Makono, who was managing the funds, by promising that the cash was available but only handing over a small fraction of the total amount.
Out of the US$13,000 transferred, he only gave Makono US$$1,100, leading to significant delays in Ruth’s medical treatment. This delay proved fatal, as Ruth passed away while still awaiting her transplant.
The case sparked outrage and grief across Zimbabwe. Influencers and public figures who supported the fundraising efforts expressed frustration over how Ruth’s family had gone quiet after receiving the donations.
