Popular Mzansi DJ, reality TV star, and sangoma Gogo Skhotheni has clarified that she has not given up her spiritual profession of being a sangoma.
The former Izangoma Zodumo star, who is also a DJ and podcaster, recently announced that she has given her life to God. However, speaking to TshisaLIVE, she said that this does not mean that she has stopped practicing as a sangoma.
Skhotheni explained that’s she decided to reclaim her journey with God after using her spiritual gift to practice dark magic. She said at times she would give her cliengs isichitho – muthi to drive couples apart.
“This journey of ubungoma, you end up doing witchcraft and other things … so I think it’s one of the darkest journeys I’ve been on as a healer myself. I had to differentiate between being a healer and being a witch — being a healer is what I chose and it goes along with God. I am a sangoma who believes in God and puts God in everything I do. I love God and he loves me too.
“I’ve been on a very dark journey with myself, questioning a lot of things that were happening, especially with my son’s condition, my son being sick. My relationship with my husband was tempted a lot. We nearly filed for divorce but God carried us through it. It hasn’t been easy.
“I’ve given my life to God before but obviously as a child of God there are certain things which I shouldn’t have done, but I did. So I eventually had to rebuild my relationship with God because I saw his mercy upon my life. I’m not going to stop being a healer” she explained.
Skhotheni joins other sangoma who have given their lives to God. These included Somizi’s baby mama, Palesa Madisakwane, and former Generations actor Thabiso Mokhethi.
For Madisakwane and Mokhethi, however, they denounced their ancestral callings.
In November last year, Madisakwane (who is also an actress) took to social media to share a video of herself shredding and burning her ancestral clothes as a symbol of her turning away from the spiritual practice.
Two months before Madisakwane’s announcement, Mokhethi took to his social media accounts to reveal that he has “resigned” from being a sangoma.
“I am resigning from all things from a lifestyle that many of us are suffering from, partying. Most of all, I am resigning from being a sangoma. I am resigning from consulting the sangoma way.
He continued: “I am resigning from the bonds I entered into when I was seeking healing, I will no longer serve as a sangoma, I will only serve as a teacher of the word, as one who chooses this word that has chosen him, and I will allow the word to. There’s nothing for me out there. Only God. My spirit says I was lost but now I am found.”
