The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is looking for a highly skilled and motivated Programme Analyst – Energy to join its Inclusive Growth team under the National Personnel Service Agreement (NPSA-9) for a one-year contract, with the possibility of extension.

A Strategic Role in the Just Energy Transition
Reporting directly to the Inclusive Growth Programme Manager and working under the overall guidance of the Resident Representative and Deputy Resident Representative, the Programme Analyst will play a pivotal role in designing and managing impactful energy initiatives. These initiatives aim to close energy gaps, especially in underserved rural communities, while aligning with South Africa’s climate goals under the Paris Agreement.
The role requires creative ideation, policy integration, and community-centered innovation. From conceptualizing off-grid and mini-grid energy systems to embedding decarbonization strategies into national planning, the Programme Analyst will be a catalyst for systemic change.

Programme Design: Develop human-centered, sustainable energy access solutions tailored to South Africa’s diverse needs.

Project Oversight: Ensure timely, budget-compliant delivery of energy projects through robust planning, monitoring, and quality assurance.

Partnership and Resource Mobilization: Cultivate strategic partnerships across government, private sector, and international donors to unlock financing for clean energy.

Thought Leadership: Contribute to national and global energy policy discourse through research, advocacy, and knowledge-sharing.

Energy Access and Efficiency: Support scalable models that enhance both energy availability and efficient usage, especially in vulnerable regions.
Candidate Profile
Ideal candidates will hold an advanced degree in Renewable Energy, Environmental Science, Sustainable Development, or a related field (or a Bachelor’s degree with additional experience). Applicants must demonstrate at least two to four years of relevant work experience in energy policy, renewable energy, energy access, or efficiency initiatives.
A deep understanding of South Africa’s energy landscape, project management acumen, policy advocacy skills, and a track record of engaging stakeholders including government officials and development partners are essential.
