Haulage Truck Driver Burnt Beyond Recognition In Fiery Collision With A Honda Fit Along Harare-Chirundu Highway

A haulage truck driver was burnt beyond recognition in a fiery accident at the 227-kilometre peg along the Harare-Chirundu Highway.

The accident, which occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, involved a head-on collision with a Honda Fit that had strayed into the truck’s lane.

The impact caused the Freightliner haulage truck, towing a lime-loaded trailer, to veer off the road and overturn, landing on its left side before erupting into flames. The driver was trapped in the wreckage and burned beyond recognition, according to provincial police spokesperson Inspector Ian Kohwera.

“The driver of a Honda Fit, registration number AGG 9412, was driving from Kariba to Harare with one passenger on board when he collided head-on with a Freightliner haulage truck, registration number AGJ 1339, towing a trailer loaded with lime going in the opposite direction,” said Inspector Kohwera.

The Honda Fit overturned once, landing upright in its lane while the truck veered off the road. The Honda Fit driver sustained injuries and was rushed to Karoi District Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition. His passenger miraculously escaped without injuries.

Inspector Kohwera expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents on Zimbabwe’s roads. He urged motorists to exercise caution and obey traffic regulations.

“We continue to urge drivers to exercise extra caution when driving and to adhere to the road rules and regulations to avoid loss of life and property,” he added.

The crash is the latest in a string of fatal accidents on the busy Harare-Chirundu Highway, raising alarm among authorities and road safety advocates. Investigations into the exact cause of the collision are ongoing, though initial reports suggest reckless driving by the Honda Fit driver may have contributed.
