A woman has died, and a three-month-old baby is missing after a Greenhorse bus plunged into the flooded Mletshane River in Gwanda South.
The bus, which was carrying 75 passengers from Gwanda town attempted to cross the flooded river but was swept away.
Police Confirms the Accident
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Loveness Mangena, confirmed the incident which occurred on Monday at around 3 PM to B-Metro.
“On 23 December 2024, at about 3 PM, a Green Horse bus with 75 passengers on board attempted to cross a flooded Mletshane River. Unfortunately, the front-left wheel of the bus missed the bridge, causing the vehicle to plunge into the river, and it was swept away,” she said.
One passenger, 33-year-old Sthembinto Dube from Mawaza Village in Gwanda District, died at the scene. Unfortunately, the three month old baby girl remains unaccounted for and is feared to have drowned.

The accident has sparked outrage among Zimbabweans, who have blamed the driver for being irresponsible and reckless. Netizens argued that the accident could have been avoided.

Rimbi Bus Catches Fire
Meanwhile, a Rimbi bus caught fire and burned down in Mt Darwin. Pictures of the bus engulfed in flames have since surfaced on social media.
The incident has triggered criticism from netizens, who lamented how Rimbi buses are frequently involved in accidents. Social media users have called on the government to ban the Rimbi bus company.
