A Chinese woman’s life was turned upside down after the birth of her baby sparked accusations and doubts in her marriage. The Shanghai woman’s husband, suspicious of their newborn’s dark skin, demanded a paternity test, leaving the young mother devastated.

A Shocking Moment in the Delivery Room

Chinese newspaper China Times reported that the 30-year-old mother shared her ordeal on Weibo, China’s popular social media platform.

She recounted the day she gave birth by C-section, which should have been a moment of joy for her family. Instead, her husband’s reaction was anything but celebratory.

“When my husband saw our baby for the first time, he just stared at him with bewildered eyes,” the woman wrote. “He refused to hold him and looked at me as if I had done something wrong.”

She admitted feeling uncomfortable herself upon seeing her child’s darker-than-expected skin tone.

“I’ve never been to Africa, and I don’t know any black people,” she explained in her post, attempting to make sense of her husband’s reaction.

A Husband’s Distrust

The husband’s response was swift and unrelenting. He demanded a paternity test, casting doubt on the child’s parentage.

“Not only did he refuse to celebrate the arrival of our son, but he also made me feel like I had betrayed him,” the woman said. “I agreed to the test because I know he is the father, but the trust in our marriage has already been shattered.”

Her husband’s behaviour has deeply hurt her, but she decided to go public to seek advice from other mothers.

“This is not how I imagined starting our family,” she wrote.

The post quickly went viral, sparking a heated debate online. Some commenters came to the woman’s defence, providing scientific explanations for the baby’s darker skin tone.

“This phenomenon can occur naturally in newborns because their skin tissue is thin and their blood circulation is poor,” one self-proclaimed expert commented. “It’s very common for dark red or even brown skin to eventually turn white.”

Another user agreed, stating,

“Newborns can have darker skin at birth, but it typically lightens over time. Your husband needs to be patient and supportive.”

Others criticised the husband’s attitude, pointing to a lack of trust and support in the relationship.
