Former President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla mayor, Mbhekiseni “Bhejane” Biyela, has tragically died at the age of 56.
The news of his death was confirmed by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) president, Velenkosini Hlabisa, during the IFP Youth Brigade summit in Durban on Monday, 16 December. Reports suggest he had been unwell for some time.

Biyela, who led the IFP-run municipality in which former President Jacob Zuma resides, died on Sunday, 15 December. Hlabisa broke the news to the summit attendees, expressing the party’s deep sorrow.
“We had a very unfortunate situation last night as we lost one of our comrades, Mbhekiseni Bernard Biyela, known to many as uBhejane, the mayor of Nkandla Municipality,” Hlabisa said. “Let us rise for a moment of silence to honour his memory.”
The IFP leader offered condolences to the Biyela family, acknowledging the mayor’s pivotal role in shaping the Nkandla community and the broader region.
“Comrade Mbhekiseni was an IFP activist who never missed a by-election,” Hlabisa added. “He was the face of Nkandla Municipality, and his loss will be deeply felt.”
The IFP extended its sympathy to the people of Nkandla and the IFP structures within the area, praising Biyela for his unwavering commitment to the party’s values.
