JMPD advises Gauteng motorists to keep calm & avoid flooded roads

Emergency services have had their hands full across Gauteng, monitoring and responding to flooding incidents.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level two warning for thunderstorms across the province.

It has been raining since Sunday in many parts of Tshwane and Johannesburg.

A motorist was rescued in Centurion after she was trapped on a flooded road.

Tshwane EMS spokesperson, Charles Mabaso, said an elderly woman was also taken to a place of safety near Soshanguve.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department has advised motorists not to panic when they find themselves in a perilous situation.

Spokesperson Xolani Fihla: “Ensure your vehicle tyres, brakes, wipers are in a good condition. Good tyre tread, depth and pressure can enhance grip on wet roads. If you start to hydroplane… don’t panic or make sudden manoeuvres. Keep the steering wheel straight and slowly lift off the accelerator.”
