Judicial Service Commission gives Mandisa Maya’s nomination for chief justice thumbs up

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has given current Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya’s nomination for chief justice, the thumbs up.

Current Chief Justice Raymond Zondo is set to retire in August and President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Maya as his pick for Zondo’s successor in February.

Before he can make the appointment, though, he has to consult with the JSC, which interviewed Maya to this end on Tuesday.

Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya spent a gruelling four hours in the hot seat on Tuesday.

Following closed deliberations, the JSC’s resolution to advise the president that she is indeed a suitable candidate for chief Justice was announced on Tuesday evening.

The decision comes as no surprise, with Maya having been the JSC’s top pick last time around.

Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) judge and Electoral Court chair, Dumisani Zondi, was also interviewed for the position of SCA deputy president on Tuesday and the JSC has resolved to give his candidacy its stamp of approval too.
