‘Kuda Tagwirei’s Son’ Scams Girlfriend, Her Workmates and Friends

A Harare man scammed his girlfriend, her friends and workmates by claiming to be the son of popular businessman Kuda Tagwirei.

Innocent Chishumba, who posed as Nyasha Tagwirei, appeared in court recently facing theft and fraud charges.

He was not asked not to enter a plea when he appeared before Magistrate Dennis Mangosi who remanded him in custody until Monday 18 November for bail consideration.

Romance Turns to Deception: ‘Kuda Tagwirei’s Son’ Scams Girlfriend

Chishuma. not only deceived people who were looking to convert their local ZiG currency into US dollars, but also his then-girlfriend Anyway Mazoe who is a teacher at Kwayedza High School in Kadoma.

According to court documents, Chishumba met Mazoe in September through her friend, Tichafa Chirewo. The two began a romantic relationship, during which Chishumba introduced himself as “Nyasha Tagwirei,” claiming to be the son of Kuda Tagwirei.

On September 21, Chishumba took Mazoe’s phone on the pretext that he wanted to check her phone and see if she was not cheating on him since he intended to marry her. Trusting him, Mazoe agreed, but Chishumba never returned the phone.

The Currency Scam Unfolds

Using Mazoe’s phone, Chishumba began contacting individuals, offering to convert their local ZiG currency into US dollars. Unaware of the scam, people transferred money to Chishumba, expecting US dollars in return.

Mazoe discovered the fraud when people started approaching her, demanding their cash. She immediately blocked her number through her service provider and reported the matter to the police. When Chishumba was arrested, Mazoe’s phone was found in his possession.

Workmate Becomes a Victim

Another victim, Faustina Makuwa, Mazoe’s colleague, fell into the same trap on September 24. Chishumba, posing as “Nyasha Tagwirei,” messaged Makuwa from Mazoe’s phone, requesting the ZiG equivalent of US$550. Believing the request to be legitimate, Makuwa sent the money. Once the funds were transferred, Chishumba became unresponsive.

Chishumba’s scam extended to other victims, including Noreen Mutaramutswa, who was swindled out of ZWG$6,700 with promises of receiving the equivalent in US dollars.
