KwaZulu-Natal police have shot and killed at least 10 suspected criminals since the beginning of August.
The latest incident occurred on Monday in Groutville on the north coast, where police killed two suspects who opened fire on them during an arrest.
According to police, dozens of firearms have been recovered from the various shootings, some of which were stolen from police officers.
Just in July month, nearly 20 suspects were killed in shootouts with police officers in parts of the province.
Police said most of the suspects were linked to murders, robberies, and hijackings, among other crimes, especially in areas north of Durban.
In August alone, police have shot and killed half of July’s number.
Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu was in the province on Monday and said police had to defend communities and protect themselves.
“When we talk, let us not sound like we are bashing police who are legitimately protecting us and, in the process, they will have to protect themselves, because they have to do their job professionally with skills. They are trained.”
In a shooting which took place in KwaMashu, north of Durban, on Sunday, a police sergeant was among those killed by officers.
